Desirable Printed Broadside of William Henry Harrison's Ill-Fated Inaugural Address
On March 4, 1841, under cold and wet skies, William Henry Harrison rode to his inauguration on horseback, wearing neither hat nor overcoat, and delivered the longest inaugural address in American history. Just three weeks later, he fell ill and died of pneumonia on April 4, serving as president for only 31 days. Harrison holds the distinction of being the last U.S. president born a British subject and the first to die in office.
Beautifully printed in ink on silk by noted Baltimore printer John Murphy. Murphy, who also produced campaign silk badges for Harrison’s 1840 supporters, was born in Ireland in 1812, apprenticed in Philadelphia, and launched his Baltimore press in the 1830s. Renowned for publishing the United States Catholic Magazine and numerous theological works, he earned the unprecedented honor of Printer to the Pope in 1866 for his work on the Plenary Council of Baltimore.
Broadside measures approx. 18" x 23.5". Folded in fourths, text remains bold and legible, a few small spots of foxing and fraying at edges. Please note: item ships folded.
