War-Dated Handwritten Letter From Winfield Scott Just 6 Days After Relinquishing Command of the Army!

American Military Commander, Commanding General of the U.S. Army and Presidential Candidate WINFIELD SCOTT handwritten autograph letter signed from New York dated November 7, 1861, just 6 days after relinquishing command of the Army during the Civil War. Scott thanks a publisher for a lithograph portrait of him, complimenting it and considering it "...an excellent likeness".

Too old and ill for further field command, Scott had successfully organized and devised the "Anaconda Plan", a Union strategy to blockade Southern ports and split the Confederacy. Following the Union defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861, President Lincoln regcognized the need for younger, more vigorous leadership, sidelining Scott in favor of 35-year old Major General George B. McLellan. Frustrated by his physical limitations and tensions with McLellan, Scott formally submitted his resignation in October of that year, ending a 53 year military career.

Scott served as Commanding General of the United States Army from 1841 to 1861, was a veteran of the War of 1812, American Indian Wars, Mexican-American War and the early stages of the American Civil War.

In full, Scott writes,
"N. York, Nov. 7, 1861

Dear Sir, I admire greatly + so does a member of my family, accidentally present – the lithographic likeness of myself you have recently executed.

We think it an admirable admirable work of art, + as a daughter thinks, an excellent likeness.

With many thanks for a copy. I remain yours truly,

Winfield Scott

J.H. Bufford, Esq. Pubr."
